Practical guidance

Generate the barcode your receiving system expects

A barcode image is useful only when its identifier, symbology, dimensions and printed bars match the workflow that will scan it. Choosing by appearance is not enough.

Confirm the format before creating labels

Use Code 128 for compact internal identifiers when the receiving software supports it. Code 39 is common in older workflows but has a more limited character set and generally requires more horizontal space.

EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-A are fixed-length retail formats. The generator can calculate or validate a check digit, but it cannot assign a legitimate product identifier or confirm that a number belongs to your company.

Protect bar widths and quiet zones

Do not stretch the barcode in one direction after export. Preserve the blank margin on both sides and use strong dark-on-light contrast. Decorative backgrounds, rounded clipping and low-resolution screenshots can change the bars enough to cause intermittent reads.

Choose SVG when artwork will be resized in design software. Use PNG only at the required output dimensions, and avoid recompressing it through messaging or office applications before printing.

Verify the production workflow

Print a sample using the actual printer, label stock, ink or thermal settings and finishing process. Scan it with the same hardware and software used at checkout, receiving or inventory, not only a phone application.

For retail products, obtain the identifier through the appropriate GS1 organization and follow the retailer’s size and placement requirements. Keep a record of the approved number and artwork revision before producing labels in volume.

Choose the right barcode format

Use Code 128 for compact internal and inventory labels, or Code 39 when an existing workflow requires its simpler character set. EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-A are fixed-length retail formats. The generator can validate or calculate a check digit, but it cannot assign a registered product number.
