Static QR codes never expire

How to Create a QR Code Menu for a Restaurant

A restaurant menu QR code should open a fast, mobile-friendly menu through a short, stable HTTPS address. The QR image itself is only the doorway: the menu page, placement, printed contrast and routine checks determine whether guests can use it without asking staff for help.

Choose a menu destination that works on phones

Use a public web page or PDF that opens without login, app installation or an account prompt. A responsive HTML menu is usually easier to read and update than a large PDF, while a PDF can work when it is compressed, uses large text and does not force guests to zoom across a wide page.

Keep the destination under a domain the business controls. A static QR code does not expire, but a removed file, changed sharing permission or cancelled third-party account can still break the experience. Open the exact link in a private browser window before encoding it.

Build the QR code for a busy dining environment

Use dark modules on a plain light background, preserve the clear quiet zone and avoid placing a large logo over the pattern. Export SVG for professional print layouts and PNG for simple digital or office-print use. Add a human-readable label such as “Scan to view menu” so the purpose is clear before a guest opens the camera.

Place the code where a guest can hold a phone steady without touching dishes or leaning across the table. A table tent normally needs a different physical size from a storefront window. Reflections, curved bottles, textured wood and low evening light should be tested at the actual location.

Protect guests from replaced or misleading codes

Print the restaurant name or domain beside the QR code and train staff to recognize the approved design. Inspect table stickers and outdoor signs for labels placed over the original. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that criminals sometimes cover legitimate public QR codes with their own codes or send unexpected QR links to phishing pages.

The landing page should clearly identify the restaurant and use HTTPS. Do not request payment credentials simply to view a menu. If ordering or payment happens later, display the merchant identity, amount and familiar payment provider before the customer confirms anything.

Maintain the menu after launch

Create a recurring check for opening hours, prices, allergens, unavailable items and the QR destination. Test at least one printed sample on iPhone and Android before a full print run, then repeat after changing the file, domain, menu platform or table artwork.

Keep a short printed menu or staff-assisted option available for guests who cannot or do not want to scan. QR access should reduce friction, not become the only way a customer can understand what the restaurant sells.

Frequently asked questions

Does a restaurant menu QR code expire?

A static QR pattern does not expire, but its linked menu can disappear or become inaccessible. Keep the destination active and test it regularly.

Should a menu QR code open a PDF or a web page?

A responsive web page is normally easier on phones and simpler to update. A compressed, accessible PDF is acceptable for a stable menu when text remains readable without excessive zooming.

Can I put the same QR code on every table?

Yes when every table opens the same menu. Use different destinations only when table-specific ordering or attribution is genuinely required and maintained by the ordering system.
